Using Patientnotes.app for Telehealth Consultations

How to capture both voices clearly during telehealth sessions using PatientNotes — including the new desktop app for Mac and Windows, and browser-based capture in Chrome and Edge.

PatientNotes works with Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Coviu, and most telehealth platforms. The main goal is to ensure PatientNotes captures both voices clearly — yours and the patient's.

There are two ways to achieve this depending on your setup:

  • Mac or Windows desktop: Use the PatientNotes Desktop App — captures system audio automatically, no configuration required

  • Browser (Chrome or Edge): Use Telehealth Audio Capture — built into PatientNotes, works on any computer

Step 1: Quick test first (recommended)

  1. Start a short test session with your telehealth platform open.

  2. Record for 10–20 seconds, then play it back.

  3. Check that the audio meter picks up both voices.

If you can hear both voices, you're ready.

If you can only hear one side (common with headphones), follow the setup below for your device.

Option A: PatientNotes Desktop App (Mac & Windows — recommended)

The PatientNotes desktop app captures system audio directly — meaning it records both your voice and your patient's voice from your telehealth call automatically. It works just like the iOS and Android apps, but on your desktop or laptop. No virtual audio cables or manual configuration required.

Download

Installing on Mac

  1. If you previously had the MacOS Audio Virtual Cable tool installed, delete it first — drag it to the Trash from your Applications folder. The desktop app replaces it entirely.

  2. Open the downloaded file and follow the on-screen installation steps.

  3. Once installed, open the PatientNotes desktop app. System audio capture is built in — no further configuration needed.

  4. The app will auto-update from this point on.

Installing on Windows

  1. Open the downloaded installer and follow the on-screen steps.

  2. Once installed, open PatientNotes from your Start menu or desktop shortcut.

  3. System audio capture and auto-update are enabled by default.

Run a test session

Start a quick test consult and play it back. You should hear both voices clearly without any additional setup.

Option B: Telehealth Audio Capture in Browser (Chrome or Edge)

If you prefer to use PatientNotes in a browser, the built-in Telehealth Audio Capture feature works on any Mac or Windows computer in Chrome or Edge. No app download required.

When to use this option

  • You're using Chrome or Edge on any computer

  • You don't want to install the desktop app

  • Your telehealth platform runs in a browser tab

How to enable Telehealth Audio Capture

  1. Open PatientNotes in Chrome or Edge.

  2. Start or open a session and click the Telehealth tab in the recording screen.

  3. When the browser share dialog opens, select Chrome Tab and enable Share audio — this step is critical.

  4. Select the tab where your telehealth call is running, then click Share.

  5. Confirm the audio meter is moving when your patient speaks.

Not sure which option to use?

  • Want the simplest setup: Download the Desktop App — it just works

  • Prefer browser only: Use Telehealth Audio Capture in Chrome or Edge

If you tell support your device (Mac/Windows), telehealth platform, and whether you use headphones, we can confirm the best setup quickly.
