iOS App Issues — New Version Coming & How to Get Early Access

Why the iOS app sometimes produces blank notes when backgrounded, what to do about it, and how to get early access to the new version.

We're aware that some users are currently experiencing issues with the PatientNotes iOS app, including sessions spinning, transcripts not loading, and recordings not processing correctly.

What's causing the issue?

The most common cause is backgrounding the app during a recording — that is, switching to another app or locking your phone while a session is being recorded.

When this happens, the app can't split the audio into normal chunks. Instead it saves the entire recording as one large file. When you return to the app and tap finish, a tiny additional chunk is created. Because that small chunk uploads faster than the large one, the system sometimes generates your clinical note before the full recording has arrived — resulting in a blank or incomplete note.

To avoid this: keep PatientNotes open and in the foreground for the full duration of your recording session. Don't switch apps or lock your screen while recording.

What to do if your note didn't generate correctly

If you end up with a blank or incomplete note due to this issue, the quickest fix is to use the Fix Session button on the affected session. This will attempt to recover and regenerate the note from your full recording.

If Fix Session doesn't resolve it, contact our support team via the chat widget with the session name and we'll manually push it through.

A new iOS app is coming

We have a new version of the iOS app in development that resolves this backgrounding issue entirely. We expect to release this broadly in the near future.

Want early access to the new version?

The new iOS app is available for testing via TestFlight. Contact our support team via the chat widget and we'll send you the installation instructions to get set up straight away.

Using the web as a workaround

In the meantime, if you're experiencing ongoing issues with the iOS app, the most reliable workaround is to use PatientNotes via your mobile browser at patientnotes.app instead of the app.
